The Saudi public could be treated to regular El Clásico matches under plans unveiled by the General Sports Authority (GSA), led by Chairman of the Board of Directors Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal and directly supervised by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The GSA has signed an initial three-year agreement, renewable for a further three years, to bring major Spanish teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid to the Kingdom as part of the national Quality of Life program.
It is expected that bringing in world-class clubs such as Real, Barca, Atletico Madrid and Valencia will not only improve the quality of sport in Saudi Arabia but also carry tourism, economic and investment benefits. This is especially the case after the Kingdom started welcoming citizens from around the world through its newly introduced e-visa program.
The GSA confirmed that Al-Jawharah stadium at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah will host the 2020 edition of the Golden Square, which will be held for the first time in the history of the tournament with the participation of four Spanish clubs from January 8-12.
This Saudi-Spanish agreement is expected to have a significant positive impact on the occupancy of hotels as well as on tourism in general within Jeddah. The high-level exposure will also help attract sporting investments from international marketing companies.
This agreement will mark the beginning of a high-profile series of football matches that will bring joy and excitement to the Saudi public. Other sporting events happening during the Al-Diriyah season will include five major championships: Formula-E, Al-Diriyah race, historic Al-Diriyah boxing, Al-Diriyah Tennis Cup and the Equestrian Al-Diriyah Festival.
