Palm trees, one of Saudi Arabia’s most important symbols, have been closely entwined with the Kingdom’s history and culture. Millions can be found across the country, producing more than 1.5 million tons of dates annually. One of the most famous date producing areas is the Al-Ahsa Oasis, an incredibly fertile haven in the east of the Kingdom.
One of the largest of its kind in the world, the Al-Ahsa Oasis is located on an area that spans 160 square kilometers between the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Dahna’ desert region. It is a piece of fertile agricultural land 160 meters above sea level and features more than 2 million palm trees and various other trees growing citrus fruits and vegetables. The oasis is characterized by its underground water sources, flowing springs and breathtaking beauty that captivate visitors.
Al-Ahsa Governorate enjoys a rich history that dates back to more than 5,000 years BC. It was inhabited by the Canaanites, then the Phoenician Giants who were famous for developing irrigation and agricultural techniques.
The people of Al-Ahsa have long practiced the farming profession and are known for growing famous date types such as Al-Khalas, Raziz, Shishi, Zamali and Halali.
Visitors wandering among the farms can witness how local farmers enjoy a symbiotic relationship with their crops, a truly loving relationship that ensures the dates of Al-Ahsa are even more special when eaten.
