The announcement of a new world golf championship in Saudi Arabia is not surprising considering the substantial development that Saudi sport has been experiencing recently. But as preparations get underway for the Saudi International championships at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in King Abdullah Economic City, a great sense of anticipation is building throughout the country thanks to the world-class field the event is expected to attract.

Saudi participation

Rising local stars Saud Al-Sharif and Faisal Salhab qualified for the championships, organized by the Saudi Golf Federation and Golf Saudi, and are currently participating in a training camp.

It will certainly be great exposure for the Saudi golf scene when they line up alongside some of the most famous stars in the world.

Great prizes

The tournament seeks to establish its position as one of the most important international championships with the participation of elite players competing for a pot of $3.5 million. The world-class field includes: Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, and Henrik Stenson.

Successful 2019 tournament for Johnson

American Dustin Johnson, ranked third in the world, won last year’s tournament, beating China’s Haotong Li to the first prize of $535,000.

Royal Greens

The challenging course consists of 18 holes with outstanding panoramic views over the Red Sea. Private members can enjoy a secluded dining area after a round or two with their friends. They can also take advantage of meeting room facilities, a library room or business center, in addition to other luxurious amenities. It was voted the best golf stadium in Saudi Arabia in 2019.

The Saudi International runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2.
